Dallas Morning News – Off the Shelf Technology & Professional Integration

In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, I discuss the role of “off the shelf” technology that’s available at retail locations in projects that I do as a professional integrator. As technology trends continue to change, it is important for the integrator to be able to mesh these devices – such as a streaming media box or a gaming console – as seamlessly as possible with products more commonly available to custom integrators like whole house audio/video distribution.

As the smart home evolves, more devices will be connected, and a lot of these devices can be configured by the homeowner. Where the integrator still plays an important role is in two key areas:

  • Recommending the right products to deliver the experience the homeowner wants to achieve
  • Delivering a cohesive experience – one app or remote or interface that can control everything, and smart devices working together, like shades that come down to help maintain a temperature, and using the HVAC as necessary to meet the desired temperature.
